The pub on Gray's Inn Road was built in 1878 and was called the Pindar of Wakefield until 1992; under that name it put on Bob Dylan's first performance in Britain, in December 1962. The back room has specialised in first nights ever since - the Pogues in 1982, Oasis's London debut in January 1994, the Beta Band in 1997, and the Decemberists' first show outside North America in 2004. It holds two hundred. The Grand Order of Water Rats, the show-business charity, bought the place in 1986, and the name came with them.
