The summit is a bare grass crown at the south end of the Heath with a line of benches along the top of it. The city reads left to right from there - Canary Wharf, the City round St Paul's with the Shard behind it, the West End, the BT Tower - and the sightline to the dome is held open by planning rules, so it survives whatever is built around it. Open at every hour, and free. Sunset is the hour to be up there: the sun goes down to the right of the view, over the Heath and the western suburbs, and the city in front of you turns gold and then starts to light up. It is a kite hill when there is wind, and the slope fills at midnight on 31 December for the fireworks.
