Beautiful Thing in 35mm, with Hettie Macdonald

Thirty years on, off a 35mm print, with the director there afterwards.

At Genesis Cinema.

Two boys on a Thamesmead estate fall in love over one hot summer, and the film refuses the tragedy everybody watching in 1996 was braced for. Jonathan Harvey adapted his own play; Hettie Macdonald shot the walkways and the stairwells in colours nobody used for council housing then, and let Sandra, Jamie's mother, and their neighbour Leah be as interesting as the boys. Mama Cass is on the soundtrack throughout.

It was loved and not much seen, and this is a 35mm print rather than a file. Macdonald takes questions afterwards with Melanie Iredale of Reclaim The Frame.
