The Rio's queer film club takes the 1985 lesbian romance that decided not to end badly.
At Rio Cinema.
Donna Deitch's Desert Hearts puts a buttoned-up English professor in 1950s Reno waiting on a divorce, and a younger woman who works at the casino and is entirely unbothered about who she is. What made it a landmark when it reached British cinemas was not the subject but the ending: lesbian characters on screen had been reliably punished for it, and Deitch simply declined.
Pink Palace is the Rio's regular queer film night, run low-fi and cheap.
