Czechoslovak New Wave

A month of the films made in the few years Czechoslovakia let its film-makers do as they liked.

Festival

At The Garden Cinema.

Between about 1963 and the Soviet tanks of August 1968 the Czechoslovak state film school and the nationalised studios turned out a body of work nobody has matched since, largely because the people making it knew the window would shut. Vera Chytilova's Daisies is the wildest of them, two girls deciding that since the world is spoiled they may as well be spoiled too, and it was banned for the food it wasted. Jiri Menzel and Frantisek Vlacil are in the season as well.

The Daisies screening on 8 October is introduced by the art historian Marketa Uhlirova.
