Devils and Shamans: the films of Andrzej Zulawski

A month of the Polish director whose actors were asked for more than anyone should give, starting with Possession.

Festival

At The Garden Cinema.

Zulawski made films that other directors describe in terms of physical risk: performances pushed past the point of control, camera work that will not settle, and a refusal to distinguish a marriage breaking up from something supernatural arriving. Possession, made in Berlin in 1981, is the famous one - Isabelle Adjani won at Cannes for it and has said little about the shoot since - and it opens the season.

Several of the screenings are introduced, by the writer and historian Susan Jonusas and the writer Stephen Thrower among others.
