The Sir John Ritblat Gallery keeps the founding documents of English literature on permanent view: the only manuscript of Beowulf, the Lindisfarne Gospels, a First Folio, Jane Austen's writing desk and teenage notebooks, the Brontës' tiny hand-made books, Lewis Carroll's handwritten Alice's Adventures Under Ground with his own drawings, and Beatles lyrics scribbled on envelopes, with Magna Carta in a room of its own. Beyond it the King's Library tower rises through the building in glass, 65,000 of George III's books, and every book published in Britain arrives here by law, on shelves that run under the Euston Road.
