The title is Walker Evans's from 1938, and the display in the Photography Centre (Rooms 100 and 101) follows how the camera recorded and shaped the United States, from early 20th-century work by Doris Ulmann to Mark Ruwedel and An-My Lê today: the South, feminist perspectives, and the line between the photograph and the real. The V&A holds one of the largest collections of American photography outside North America. Free.
