Mount Auburn Cemetery, Boston

The American garden cemetery that opened seven years before Highgate, in a free evening talk.

At Highgate Cemetery.

Deborah Kahn of Boston University on Mount Auburn, founded in 1831 outside Boston as part burial ground and part experimental garden, and, like London's garden cemeteries, a response to an urban burial crisis. It covers a hilly hundred and seventy acres above the Charles River with the city six miles off, and it was set up by trustees — physicians, merchants, Harvard men — as philanthropy rather than as a business, which is the sharpest difference from the London seven.
