Charles and Diana chose St Paul's over Westminster Abbey because it holds more people: two and a half thousand inside, and the crowd all the way down Ludgate Hill. Diana's dress had twenty-five feet of ivory silk trailing behind it, gathered up in armfuls to get her up the steps, and that is the photograph everyone remembers.
This is where the country comes for its big services: the Queen's jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012 and 2022, her eightieth and ninetieth birthdays, Churchill's funeral in 1965, and the service after the Falklands War. Inside, the Whispering Gallery runs round the bottom of the dome and the stairs carry on to the Golden Gallery outside it; Nelson and Wellington are buried in the crypt.
