The ritual bronzes of the Shang dynasty, cast between roughly 1600 and 1046 BC, are so consistent in style across so much of China that historians have read them as proof of a single commanding court. Siran Liu of the University of Science and Technology Beijing works from the other end - the workshops, the ore, the alloys - and gets a more complicated answer.
