Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.
From the Royal Hospital along the riverside village Chelsea was before it was an address.
Every Wednesday, 13:45Walking
It starts at the Royal Hospital, where the Chelsea Pensioners still wear the scarlet coat that was British army uniform three hundred years ago, and works through the village that grew along the river before the King's Road was anything but a king's road. Writers, painters and the chronically fashionable all came here for the same reason - it was cheap, quiet and out of town - and the houses they took are still standing.
