George IV, as Regent, meant to have a summer palace here and got Nash's terraces, the lake and the great circle instead; the palace was never built, and the park kept the name. Queen Mary's Gardens in the Inner Circle have the best roses in London, and the American ambassador's residence, Winfield House, has the largest private garden in the city after the palace's.
