Rhiannon Giddens has two Grammys, a Pulitzer and a MacArthur fellowship, and the thread running through all of it is the same: American music is Black music, the banjo is an African instrument, and the record was falsified. She works that argument out in performance rather than lecturing it - old-time songs, minstrel-era material reclaimed, her own writing, and opera and ballet scores alongside.
