Rushdie was stabbed on stage in New York in 2022 and lost an eye. Gibney's film follows the life, the work and the year afterwards, and much of it is footage shot by Rushdie's wife, the poet and artist Rachel Eliza Griffiths, in the months of his recovery - which is a different thing from an interview about it, and the reason the film is worth the trip rather than the book alone.
