In 1985 Ross McElwee took a grant to make a documentary about Sherman's march through Georgia, was left by his girlfriend before he started, and turned the camera on himself and the women he met instead. Sherman's March invented a kind of film that everything from Michael Moore to reality television came out of, and it is here newly restored in 4k.
Remake is what four decades did to that method. It is built from footage of his son Adrian, some shot by Ross and some by Adrian, made after Adrian's death, and it is about the distance between filming a life and understanding one.
McElwee introduces Remake on 25 September. Sherman's March plays once, on 27 September, the same day as Remake's Sunday screening.
