The First Island Chain runs from Japan down through Taiwan to the Philippines, and the argument of this briefing is that the contest over it is being conducted by means chosen because they are hard to call an attack: unmanned vessels, coastguard ships, the maritime militia, and ordinary fishing boats doing something other than fishing.
Benjamin Blandin studies that overlap and the awkward questions it raises - who an action can be attributed to, and what deters a fleet that is not formally a navy. He is at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research in Taiwan, and was a strategy consultant at Airbus Defence and Space before he was an academic.
Put on by the Centre for Statecraft and National Security, which sits inside the Department of War Studies at King's College London and was formed in 2025 out of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and the Centre for Grand Strategy. Ticketed, and open to anybody who books.
