Adriana Mater

Saariaho's opera about a woman who keeps the child of the man who attacked her.

Opera

At London Coliseum.

Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf set their opera in a country at civil war: Adriana is raped by a soldier, keeps the child, and raises Yonas without telling him whose son he is. When he finds out he goes looking for his father, and his mother's argument to him is that mercy takes more strength than murder and is the only thing that stops the cycle. Saariaho, who died in 2023, wrote some of the most physical orchestral writing of her generation, and it does the work here that a chorus would do elsewhere.

Annilese Miskimmon directs and André de Ridder, ENO's music director designate, conducts, with Kristina Stanek as Adriana and Caspar Singh as Yonas. Sung in English with surtitles, two hours thirty with one interval.
