On a Scottish island governed by a strict church, Bess marries an oil rig worker; when an accident paralyses him, he asks her to sleep with other men and describe it to him, telling her it will keep him alive. Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek's adaptation of Lars von Trier's 1996 film has been called the best American opera of its decade, and this is its UK premiere.
Tinuke Craig directs and Joana Carneiro conducts, with Lauren Snouffer as Bess and Liam James Karai as Jan. Sung in English with surtitles, two hours thirty-five with one interval, and an 18+ guidance for sexual and domestic violence. There is a BSL-interpreted performance on 23 February.
