Verdi's courtesan gives up the man she loves because his father asks her to, and dies of tuberculosis having told nobody why. Peter Konwitschny's staging throws out the parties and the furniture and leaves cascading red curtains and a single chair, which removes every distraction from a piece that is usually staged as spectacle and is actually about three people in a room making a decision.
Kevin John Edusei conducts. Heidi Stober sings Violetta for most of the run, with Alison Langer on 3 and 5 March; Egor Zhuravskii is Alfredo and David Stout is Germont. Sung in English with surtitles, one hour fifty straight through without an interval.
