A singer, her painter lover and the chief of police who wants her: Puccini's opera runs on the simplest and nastiest of engines, a bargain in which the price is the woman herself. Annilese Miskimmon sets it in a concert hall in an unnamed European country in the middle of civil conflict, which puts the artists and the secret policeman in one building and lets the piece be about what a regime does with people who perform for it.
Ben Glassberg conducts; Axelle Fanyo sings Tosca and Chaz'men Williams-Ali Cavaradossi, with Christopher Purves as Scarpia for the first half of the run and Craig Colclough taking it from 21 November. Sung in English with surtitles, two hours fifteen with one interval.
