Trial by Jury & The Zoo

Two short Victorian comedies by Sullivan, one of them almost never staged.

Opera

At London Coliseum.

A double bill of Sullivan at his fastest. Trial by Jury, with Gilbert, is a breach-of-promise case sung end to end with no dialogue at all, and it is the piece that made the partnership. The Zoo, written with Bolton Rowe the same year, is the one nobody puts on: a man trying to poison himself with pastry at the zoo, and a peer disguised as a keeper, in about forty minutes.

John Savournin directs and Peter Whelan conducts, with Mary Bevan, Robert Murray and Neal Davies. One hour twenty-five, no interval, with guidance of five and over; under-fives are not admitted.
