Garry Essendine is a matinee idol in his forties, surrounded by a wife he has not divorced, a secretary who runs him, a producer, a manager and a succession of admirers who keep arriving at the flat. Coward wrote it in 1939 and played Essendine himself, which tells you how much of it is self-portrait and how little of it is flattering.
