Jackson's 1959 novel is the one most ghost stories since have borrowed from, and its trick is restraint: four people come to study a house, and what happens to Eleanor is never explained enough to be dismissed. The famous first paragraph, about a house that is not sane, does most of the work before anything has happened at all.
