Himmelweit arrived as a refugee, became one of very few women to hold a professorship at the School, and in 1958 published Television and the Child - the first large empirical study of what the new medium was doing to the people watching it, and the ancestor of every argument about screens since. Five scholars, including her daughter Susan Himmelweit, mark her centenary as part of LSE's 130th anniversary.
