Smith thought the discovery of America and the sea route to the East Indies round the Cape were the two greatest events in recorded history. Sachs takes that seriously rather than as rhetoric, and argues from new geospatial datasets that it captures something true about long-run economic divergence and still explains a good deal about the present.
