Daron Acemoglu: What Happened to Liberal Democracy?

The Nobel laureate on how liberalism stopped keeping its own promises.

Lecture / talkBooks & writersFree

At London School of Economics.

Acemoglu's argument is that liberal democracy worked while it delivered shared prosperity, self-government and the free pursuit of knowledge, and that a philosophy built to challenge power never adjusted to becoming the establishment. He puts the turn down to a highly educated elite that became politically dominant, separated itself from everyone else, and set about reshaping mass culture while inequality widened underneath. Hosted by the European Institute, chaired by Yaprak Gursoy.
