Acemoglu's argument is that liberal democracy worked while it delivered shared prosperity, self-government and the free pursuit of knowledge, and that a philosophy built to challenge power never adjusted to becoming the establishment. He puts the turn down to a highly educated elite that became politically dominant, separated itself from everyone else, and set about reshaping mass culture while inequality widened underneath.
