The amazing Annamites: where the wild things hide

The mountain forests of Laos and Vietnam, and the race to find what still lives in them.

Lecture / talkScience & natureParks & nature

At Royal Geographical Society.

The Annamite range runs down the spine of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia through wet rainforest and limestone karst, and it holds species that have changed very little since the Miocene - among them the saola, a horned bovid unknown to science until 1992 and not photographed alive in the wild since 2013. Robert Timmins, Phonesouk Chanthalavong and Lorraine Scotson of the Saola Foundation describe the survey work, which pairs indigenous tracking knowledge with genetic sampling of leeches and river water.
