Haunted by Monuments

Anna Collar on why archaeology, of all disciplines, has no theory of haunting.

Lecture / talk

At Society of Antiquaries of London.

Ghosts run through literature, art, music and anthropology, and are almost absent from archaeology - a field that spends its whole time among the material remains of the dead. Collar's argument turns the usual formulation round: archaeologists are not haunted by what is missing but by what is still there, the monuments everyone lives alongside and describes with flat words like reuse and afterlife. An Ordinary Meeting of Fellows lecture, open to anyone.
