Roman emperors, medieval monarchs and their illnesses

Nick Summerton on whether you can diagnose someone who died fifteen hundred years ago.

Lecture / talkHistoryScience & nature

At Society of Antiquaries of London.

Retrospective diagnosis takes modern medicine to a historical figure and asks what was wrong with them - usually from documents and objects alone, since only in rare cases like Richard III is there a skeleton to examine. The practice has been called both illogical and inappropriate, given how far medicine has moved, and the lecture takes that objection seriously rather than brushing past it. A lunchtime lecture.
