The familiar account of Tudor art runs from Holbein's Henry VIII to the coded symbolism of Elizabeth's portraits, and Faraday's argument is that it leaves out most of what was actually made: portraits commissioned by people well below the court, narrative painting in ordinary houses, and the textiles, imports and printed images through which most people said something about their religion and their standing. An Ordinary Meeting of Fellows lecture, open to anyone.
