Anna Marie Roos on Martin Folkes's scientific grand tour, and the only man to have led both this society and the Royal Society.

Folkes was Newton's protege, a mathematician and an antiquary, and between 1733 and 1735 he toured Italy as an ambassador for Newtonian optics - demonstrating the experiments to the nobility of Venice and Florence while measuring ancient and Renaissance buildings to work out how they had been engineered. He remains the only person to have presided over the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries at the same time. An Ordinary Meeting of Fellows lecture.
