Tintagel was a coastal citadel and high-status settlement in the fifth and sixth centuries, and the recent excavations by the Cornwall Archaeological Unit turned up stone buildings and middens full of imported pottery and glass. What that material shows is the reach: post-Roman Cornwall connected along the Atlantic seaboard and as far as the eastern Mediterranean, at a period usually described as isolated.
