Beethoven died in March 1827, and the Barbican marks the bicentenary with seven concerts weighted towards the pieces that need an orchestra of this size to land. Andris Nelsons brings both of his: the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, the latter having played this music continuously since Beethoven was alive.
Lang Lang plays all five piano concertos. Quatuor Diotima open the series with a quartet recital, and it closes with the Academy of Ancient Music and the circus company Circa taking on The Creatures of Prometheus, the only ballet Beethoven wrote.
