Half Six Fix

One hour, one symphony, half past six: the LSO's answer to a concert that ends too late.

Classical

At Barbican Centre.

The London Symphony Orchestra's short-form series starts at 18:30 and runs an hour, with no interval and one substantial work rather than the usual overture-concerto-symphony evening. The conductor or a player introduces the piece from the platform first, and screens carry the detail, which makes it the easiest way into an orchestra for anyone who has never sat in front of one.

Ten through the season, and the programmes are not lightweight: Bruckner's Ninth, Shostakovich's Eighth, Prokofiev's Fifth, Scriabin's Fourth, and evenings marking Steve Reich at ninety and John Adams at eighty.
