The first film of Dracula, made in 1922 without the rights, so the count became Orlok and Max Schreck played him as something closer to a rat than a nobleman. Murnau shot real castles and real streets and let shadow do the rest. Hugo Max improvises the score live on viola and piano, drawing on 1970s horror soundtracks, the Second Viennese School composers who were Murnau's contemporaries, and Jewish traditional music. Ninety-four minutes, and the improvisation is different every night.
