The Cabinet of Dr Caligari with a live score by Hugo Max

The painted-shadow film of 1920, restored, with live viola improvised against it.

At Prince Charles Cinema.

A hypnotist exhibits a sleepwalker at a fairground who can tell your future, and at night sends him out to kill. Robert Wiene had the sets painted rather than built - the shadows and the light are brushwork on canvas, the angles are all wrong on purpose - and horror, film noir and gothic cinema all took something from it. This is the restoration. Hugo Max improvises live on viola, playing the film's jagged geometry as melody and giving the somnambulist a ghostlier sound than the showman who controls him.
