Anna Biller's Technicolor pastiche about a witch whose love spells keep killing people.
Elaine wants to be loved and brews for it, and the men who drink what she gives them do not survive the experience. Anna Biller wrote, directed, edited, scored it and made the sets and costumes herself, shooting on 35mm in the colour and the framing of a 1960s melodrama so precisely that people mistake it for a restoration. What it is actually about - what women are asked to become to be wanted - has been argued over since it came out. Part of Maneaters, a season on the female supernatural run with the National Film and Television School.
