The Adventures of Prince Achmed with a live score by Hugo Max

The oldest surviving animated feature, cut from black paper, with live viola.

At Prince Charles Cinema.

Lotte Reiniger made it in Berlin between 1923 and 1926 out of cut-paper silhouettes moved frame by frame under a camera, three years before Disney's first Mickey Mouse and the earliest animated feature that still exists. It takes its story from the Arabian Nights: a sorcerer, a flying horse, and Achmed carried off to places the paper renders as pure shape. Sixty-seven minutes. Hugo Max improvises the score live on viola.
